Andy, I checked out your picture on Flickr, but I couldn't find it by searching for any of the tags you used. I had to search user name and view it that way. I guess it takes a while for the Flickr tag database to update. I'd expect your image to show up in the next couple of days.

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / Flickr Use
Forum thread: Getting Flickr photos to show up

I edited this page to include a field for the google maps view. All we need to do to view in google maps is to paste the code from the KMZ link into the google maps search bar.
sure. I updated the widget, trying to find the best search term I could, and this is the best I came up with. If you find antoher term that works well, all I have to do is type it in and it'll update on teh site. NELSAP's book is gonna go on sale soon, and if it's available for sale on amazon, what would you think about putting that in our search box, and maybe putting a specific ad on the sidebar for the book?

Forum category: Hidden / Per page discussions
Forum thread: The GEOSAP Shop

Ok, finally figured out what you meant—must have been having a brain cramp. I have been getting the tag right recently, but didn't notice the Area Name till today. I changed a bunch so far, but now I'm thinking that we should change the heading name in the template to just say "Photos" so we don't have to update the area name.
I've now uploaded all files in Canada, the Midwest, and the norhteast through New Hampshire. If everyone could hold off on uploading maps until I finish with the site, that would be great. I'll post here when I'm done. This will make it much easier to make sure all maps are hosted on hostfile and are downloaded correctly.

The 1st 15 files I uploaded received 70 hits in about a week.
Andy, just a reminder that all the uploads should be going to Hostfile now. I don't remember if I PMed you the login info or not, but I can resend it if you want me too. Does this sound like a good idea? I'm starting to go through all the currently hosted files and moving them to hostfile but i'll stop if you've got other thoughts on the matter.

And another picky thing. Make sure you're entering the area name in the FLickr section. If you don't enter a name, it says Area Name Images. Be sure to put a tag for flickr in the field when making a page, and to tag the page wiht the corresponding tag. If that's a little confusing, i updated the guide to submissions last week when I came up with that system.

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / Mapping
Forum thread: New Areas Mapped

I've been trying to figure out a way to easily organize a list of tags for the Flickr photo system. I think the best way to do it is with a tag-cloud. Whenever making a page, be sure to tag it with the name you entered in the flickr module.
Just a quick summary of the traffic for the last couple weeks.

Traffic trend has been upwards, and the most viewed pages on the site are state pages. The page for okemo is actually the #8 most viewed page on the site in the last month. Other popular pages are new hampshire, vermont, the GEOSAP software page (really good to see) and the NY state page. Traffic is steady with about 60-70 pageviews per day. Not bad for a largely unpromoted site.

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / GEOSAP Presentation
Forum thread: GEOSAP Views

Since the beginning we've been hosting the KMZ files on the space the wikidot provides us. That's good and all, but it doesn't allow for download statistics. Plus, if the site goes down then all the downloads go down as well. I searched around on the web for a while and finally found www.hostfile.org. The site is a little tacky, and the guys who runs it is…interesting, but it looks like it will provide us with what we need. I registered on it (andy, i'll PM you the user info) and I changed the mohawk mountain kmz link over to the hostfile site. I think I'll let it go like this for a while and see how reliable the site is and how the download statistics work out, but I think this is ultimately the direction we want the downloads to go in. Any questions about this, post here or feel free to PM me. I'll update the GEOSAP Submissions guide as soon as we officially move to the hostfile site.

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / GEOSAP Mechanics
Forum thread: Hosting of .kmz files

I talked to LaurieP on Snowjournal, teachski is her site. She gave us permission to use her images as long as a credit is given. She also wants us to contact her if the image is credited to someone else. I'll place a blanket credit on the homepage and do my best to update credits on the images themselves. Easier to do now rather than later when there are a lot more of them.

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / GEOSAP Presentation
Forum thread: teachski.com maps

David, thanks for fixing the states I created last night; adding zoom level was something I'd been too lazy to do. I saw something was messed up with the maps across the site, too, but I couldn't fix it because I've forgotten the login info to update the quikmaps. Could you post it again? I'll then add the areas I've mapped recently (and try to update the # of areas mapped on the state pages and front page, as well—something I've been remiss in doing, sorry).

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / Quikmaps Use
Forum thread: Recent issues

the reason I chose flickr is because wikidot already has a module in place to support a flickr gallery. Obviously it's not foolproof (the overlap onto the sidebar is one problem), but it was the easiest to set up. Flickr does allow geotagging with location, and it's built upon GE, so I assume elevation would be easy enough. I'll look into the geotagging through flickr and see if there is a way to collect all of the geotag locations for images with a certian tag. That's the way the image galleries work right now. They look through flickr for all of the images tagged with "geosap" and "the area name". The one problem with geotagging is that we'd have to find a way to collect all the geosap images into one place that would display on GE.

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / GEOSAP Presentation
Forum thread: PIctures

I definitely like the idea of pictures. Given the focus of the site, I think the coolest thing would be if we could geotag them such that they would show up in GE and you could click on them to view from within GE. Especially cool if geotagging can contain attitude data as well (azimuth/elevation/clocking angles). Any chance that picasa would offer more connectivity to GE given their affiliation?

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / GEOSAP Presentation
Forum thread: PIctures

just an update, i looked into this real quick, created a flickr account, and started uploading images. I quickly ran into the 3-set limit for not-pro users. A pro-membership is $24.95 per year, which is a bit steep. I'm gonna look into other ways of organizing it and maybe sorting by tags. Check out the Ragged Mountain and Loon Mountain pages for an example of the picture implementation.

Forum category: GEOSAP Use / GEOSAP Presentation
Forum thread: PIctures
